Methodology
All calculations use the same baseline vehicle: 2019 Toyota Corolla 1.8L CVT, 45,000 km, FOB Guangzhou $8,200. Ocean freight uses actual July 2026 rates. Duties and taxes reflect the current published rates for each country. Clearing agent and port fees are based on actual shipments we completed in Q2 2026. Exchange rates as of July 18, 2026.
The Results: Landed Cost Comparison
1. UAE (Dubai –Jebel Ali Port): $11,050 landed
Freight: $800. Insurance: $135. Duty: 5% of CIF = $457. VAT: 5% = $524. Clearing: $450. Port fees: $250. Total: $11,050. UAE is by far the cheapest due to 5% duty and 5% VAT. No age restrictions. No RHD/LHD restriction. The best entry port for re-export to other regions.
2. Kenya (Mombasa): $15,560 landed
Freight: $1,050. Insurance: $139. Duty (25%): $2,319. Excise (25%): $2,319. VAT (16%): $1,954. IDF (3.5%): $325. RDL (2%): $186. Clearing: $650. Port fees: $280. Total: $15,560. Competitive but requires RHD –the Corolla in this example would need to be a Japan-market unit.
3. Nigeria (Lagos): $19,650 landed
Freight: $1,350. Insurance: $143. Duty (35%): $3,393. Levy (35%): $3,393. VAT (7.5%): $1,230. Other levies: $340. Clearing: $800. Port fees: $350. Total: $19,650. Nigeria's 78% effective duty rate dominates the cost. However, Nigeria's higher resale prices ($14,000-$17,000 for this Corolla) partially compensate.
4. Tanzania (Dar es Salaam): $20,380 landed
Freight: $1,250. Insurance: $142. Duty (25%): $2,340. VAT (18%): $2,276. Excise (10%): $936. Other fees: $480. Clearing: $600. Port fees: $310. Total: $20,380. Tanzania's 18% VAT (vs 7.5% in Nigeria) adds significantly. However, port efficiency is better than Lagos.
5. Ghana (Tema): $21,520 landed (ICE) | $17,220 (EV)
Freight: $1,100. Insurance: $140. Duty (20%): $1,860. Levy (35%): $3,255. VAT (12.5%): $1,692. NHIL (2.5%): $338. GETFL (2.5%): $338. ECOWAS (0.5%): $47. Processing (1%): $93. Clearing: $600. Port fees: $280. Total (ICE): $21,520. Total (EV, levy exempt): $17,220. The EV exemption in Ghana saves $4,300 on this vehicle –a compelling argument for importing EVs to Ghana.
What This Means for Importers
- UAE is the cheapest entry point by a wide margin. If you can sell into the UAE market or re-export from Jebel Ali to Africa, you should. The 5% duty regime is unmatched. See our shipping guide for Dubai freight rates.
- Ghana's high cost is offset by higher resale values –the same Corolla that lands at $21,520 in Tema typically sells for $15,000-$17,000, comparable to Lagos despite higher landed cost. The Ghanaian market compensates through pricing power.
- Kenya's RHD requirement is the real filter, not duty cost. Kenya's duty structure is middle-of-the-pack, but the RHD requirement means you cannot simply ship Chinese-market inventory. You need Japan/UK-sourced vehicles.
- Container shipping cost differences are relatively small –at most $600 between the nearest (Dubai) and farthest (Lagos) destinations in our analysis. Duty structure, not freight, drives the landed cost gap.
